A clinically competent surgical technologist who delivers care to the patient undergoing surgical/procedural intervention. These patients cover the life span of: newborn - 0-28 days, pediatric - 29 days - 10 years, adolescent - 11 years - 18 years, adult - 19 years - 55 years, and geriatrics 56+ years. Acting as a scrub person, he/she handles the instruments, supplies and equipment necessary during the surgery/procedure and has an understanding of the procedure being performed and has the necessary knowledge and ability to insure quality patient care during the operative procedure. The Surgical Technician is concerned with the smooth operation of Central Sterile Department daily. The primary role of the technician is the knowledge of instrumentation, knowledge of procedures for sterilization and the maintenance and upkeep of the sterilization equipment.
