| Position Description: |
The Network Engineer is the journey level position within the Network Services Section responsible for network equipment troubleshooting, diagnosing and resolving the day-to-day problems associated with the Sutter Health communications network. Consults with and works at the direction of the Senior Network Engineer and the Networks Services Section Manager on network related issues. Responsible for network documentation, configuration management, and input into network management mapping design and development. Works with project management groups on projects that involve network implementation and use.

| Experience Required: |
Education:
A Bachelor's Degree in Communications or Information Services or related fields is required. The equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted. Successful completion of multiple courses from a recognized program in network engineering or related field is highly desirable.
Experience:
Proven demonstrated experience working in a heterogeneous LAN/WAN environment installing, implementing, and testing a wide variety of switches, hubs, routers, modems, CSU's/DSU's, bridges, and leased lines is required. Proven demonstrated experience utilizing network troubleshooting tools and devices to isolate and resolve complex network issues is required. Hands-on experience using GUI/SNMP based network management software tools to monitor and manage networks is desired. Proven demonstrated experience gathering functional requirements as input into network design and implementation required. Health care experience is desired.
Knowledge:
Demonstrated knowledge communications topologies and networks including but not limited to Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, ATM, and Frame Relay is required.
Demonstrated knowledge of WAN systems including common carrier network services and methods is required. Demonstrated knowledge of physical and logical network design and implementation strategies and methods in a distributed network infrastructure is required. Demonstrated knowledge of GUI based network management application software is desired. Demonstrated knowledge of structured wiring as well as configuration management principles and practices is desired. Demonstrated knowledge of network management tools and systems is desired.
Special Skills/Equipment:
Must be able to be involved in multiple projects at the same time and deliver quality service. Must have good organizational skills and be able to prioritize multiple projects and objectives in a rapidly changing environment. Must have the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Must possess strong oral, written, and presentation communication skills. Must be committed to providing exceptional customer service and responding to user needs in a prompt, courteous manner. Ability to provide network troubleshooting and diagnosis, problem solving analysis and resolution, network modeling and documentation, and other tasks associated with installing and maintaining WANs, LANs and MANs. Skills and experience with hubs and switches, routers, Fluke Lanmeters, HP OpenView, network general sniffer, Microtest scanners and Pentascanners, and other network diagnostic equipment are highly desirable.
Physical Requirements:
Office and Hospital environment. Position requires travel and the ability to adapt to flexible work hours. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds safely.
