In 2001 Novato Community Hospital opened a $40 million replacement hospital and medical office building on the Novato Medical Campus. The Coder/DRG Specialist assigns ICD-9-CM and CPT-4 codes to diagnoses and procedures documented in inpatient and out patient medical records.  These codes are used to calculate DRG and APC assignments required for reimbursement and in combination with other abstracted data, are used to establish a statistical database.  This database is used throughout the organization for medical staff improvement activities, clinical effectiveness and outcome studies, medical staff credentialing, administrative planning, research, and to meet regulatory reporting requirements    The 47-bed Novato Community Hospital is a not-for-profit, general acute care hospital accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. In 2001 Novato Community Hospital opened a $40 million replacement hospital and medical office building on the Novato Medical Campus.     Experience Required:   •       Education:    High school graduate or equivalent   Coding Certification (RHIA, RHIT, or CCS) required.   •       Experience:    Minimum of five (5) years experience in inpatient and outpatient coding in an acute care facility.  One (1) year experience using a computerized coding and abstracting system.   •       Knowledge:   Demonstrated knowledge of hospital inpatient and ICD-9-CM and CPT coding rules.  Knowledge of APC and DRG assignment logic, National Correct Coding Initiative edits, Coding Clinic and CPT Assistant coding guidelines and the contents of a medical record required.  Knowledge of compliance guidelines, analysis, assembly, terminal digit filing, medical staff incomplete record processing required, billing functions, and components of a charge master required.
